Boys tennis: Cards fall in 2AA-South individual tournament
A Willmar singles player and two Cardinals doubles teams won matches at the Section 2AA-South tournament on Saturday at Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter.
Preston Peterson drew a first round by before defeating Tyler Wambeke of Hutchinson 6-4, 6-3 in round two. The fourth-seeded Peterson lost to top-seed Mason Bultje, of Mankato East, 6-0, 6-2 in the third round.
The Cardinals doubles team of Tate Hovland and Drew Corneil won two matches before falling to the top-seeds in the third round. Hovland and Corneil defeated Mankato West’s David Pietsch and Roland Flores 6-1, 6-2 in the first round, then downed New Ulm’s Isaiah Johnson and Nic Gartner 6-3, 6-2 in the second round. They were eliminated by top-seeds Bryce Remple and Zach Anderson, of Hutchinson, 6-2, 6-1.
The Cardinals No. 10-seeded doubles team of Nick Courtney and Issac Yoakum upended No. 7 seed Eric Morris and Luke Washa, of New Prague, 6-1, 6-1 and took a set off the No. 2-seeded team of Chris Lui and Kameron Saiki, of Mankato East before falling 4-6, 6-4, 6-2.
In another singles match, The Cardinals’ Tom Nilles-Melchert lost to Jace Manthe, of New Prague, 6-4, 2-6, 6-3.
