Boys tennis: LQPV/DB's Hansen advances to state
REDWOOD FALLS -- Unbeaten Lac qui Parle Valley/Dawson-Boyd senior Jack Hansen advanced to the Class A State Individual Tennis Tournament by sweeping Joey Vajgrt of Luverne 6-2, 6-0 in the Section 3A singles championship Tuesday.
Hansen never lost more than two games in his four individual postseason tourney matches to reach the state tournament for the fourth straight year.
Hansen upended West Central Conference rival Jesse Brace of Montevideo 6-0, 6-2 in the semifinals Tuesday to reach the title match.
Also advancing to the state individual tourney from the section -- but which likely won't play in the state meet -- is the Benson doubles team of senior Vince Smolders and freshman Aaron Szczur.
The Braves' duo topped Carter Linder/Andrew Johnson of Worthington 7-5, 6-3 in the semifinals before falling 6-3, 6-2 to Dustin Deutsch/Jonny Vajgrt of section team champion Luverne.
However, Smolders, an exchange student from Holland, returns for his home country the day before the state tournament starts. It's not likely the Minnesota State High School League will allow the section's third-place team to go, or allow the Braves to substitute for Smolders, said Benson coach Jonas Grossman.
The individual state tournament is June 7-8 at the Reed Sweatt Family Tennis Center in Minneapolis.
