Boys Tennis Roundup: Alexandria edges Willmar

ALEXANDRIA — Willmar fell to Alexandria 4-3 for the second time in four days on Tuesday in a Central Lakes Conference match.

Willmar played strong in singles, take three of four matches, but Alexandria again swept all three doubles matches.

Preston Peterson, Issac Yoakum and Jarod Swoboda claimed singles victories for the Cardinals, who are 2-3 overall.

Willmar plays next against St. Cloud Tech at 3 p.m. today at the Willmar High School courts.

Yoakum upped his winning streak to five matches. Swoboda earned a revenge victory over Alexandria’s Eric Branch, who defeated Swoboda when the team’s played last Saturday.

Willmar head coach Jim Anderson said progress in the Cardinals doubles teams is coming.

“Our young doubles teams at Nos. 1 and 2 showed improvement,” Anderson said. “They were competitive in both matches.”

West Central Benson 4, Minnewaska 3 Minnewaska won two singles matches and claimed one doubles match but couldn’t overcome a deficit from having to forfeit two matches.

Corey Goff/Brandon Gossen won 6-1, 6-0 at 1-doubles for Benson, while Minnewaska claimed 1-singles with Jake Pederson also winning in straight sets.
