WILLMAR -- The Willmar Cardinals picked up a second consecutive win for the first time this spring by knocking New Ulm out of the postseason picture 6-1 on Tuesday at the high-school courts.

The No. 4 Cardinals (7-10) head for Mankato to play the East Cougars at 4 p.m. on Thursday. East is the Section 2AA-South's top-seeded team.

"Our record is pretty respectable for this team," said first-year Willmar head coach Jim Anderson. "I'm proud of them. They've worked very hard and now we want to be ready to give East a run."

At 1-singles, Preston Peterson came from down a set to win 4-6, 6-4, 6-4. The other five points came in straight-set victories.

Willmar had tipped Alexandria 4-3 to end the regular season on Friday.

Brandon Repsher and Carter Iverson won a three-setter at 1-doubles to earn the fourth point for Yellow Medicine East.

All four of the singles matches were won 6-0, 6-0 with the teams splitting, including LQPV/DB senior Jack Hansen at 1-singles.

Hansen, No. 6 in the Class A individual rankings, improved to 13-0 on the season and hasn't played a three-set match all season.
