Breastfeeding tent is a welcome addition at fair
WILLMAR -- A little white tent provides privacy and comfort for breastfeeding mothers at the fair this year.
The new tent located to the right of the log cabin office at the Kandiyohi County Fairgrounds is equipped with everything a breast-feeding mother needs -- comfy chairs, rockers and a changing table, along with books to occupy the older kids.
The goal is to provide a comfortable place for breastfeeding mothers to feed their babies in privacy, said Jeanette Jacobson, member of the Kandiyohi County Breastfeeding Coalition.
After the idea of the tent was discussed at a fair convention in the cities, Amanda Lundgren of New London asked the Kandiyohi County Breastfeeding Coalition to help make it a possibility.
"We helped pay for the tent and helped with the setup," Jacobson said.
Wednesday was the first official day of the Kandiyohi County Fair. Tuesday was entry day. The fair continues through Saturday, and today is Senior Citizen Day.
Jacobson sat in the tent reading a book Wednesday morning. "I'm just here to make sure people are comfortable and to answer any questions," she said.
There have already been several people stopping by saying, "I wish they had this when my kids were young," she said. "I anticipate we're going to be a popular stop."

The tent will be open to any breastfeeding mothers for the entirety of fair. They are welcome to feed their babies, change diapers and just relax. They are welcome to bring their other children as well.
"We have coloring books and books for them to read while mom is feeding the baby," Jacobson said.
