BUFFALO LAKE -- Having been "discovered'' by Mark Dayton, it is only appropriate.

McKaia Ryberg sang the national anthem Monday at the new governor's inauguration. Dayton's office contacted the 11-year-old girl and her family during the week before Christmas to ask if she would do the honors, her mother, told the Tribune.

Ryberg is a sixth-grade student at St. Mary's Elementary School in Bird Island. Her parents, Brian and Sandy Ryberg, live and farm near Buffalo Lake.

Ryberg was discovered by Dayton when she sang the national anthem for a Tim Orth benefit that he attended more than a year ago. Dayton was so impressed that he invited Ryberg to sing the national anthem for President Obama's visit to Minneapolis in October. She frequently sings the national anthem before sporting and other school events.
