Bungum fuels Bulldogs' rout of Dutchmen
PAYNESVILLE -- Josh Bungum racked up 377 total yards after running for 230 and throwing for another 147 and was part of all four of Paynesville's touchdowns to lead the Bulldogs past Melrose 28-12 in a non-conference game Friday.
After a scoreless first quarter, Bungum fired scoring strikes covering 27 yards to Jason Kampsen and 14 yards to Weston Brinkman in the second quarter to put Paynesville (3-1) ahead 14-6.
Bungum then hooked up with Kampsen again in the third for a 15-yard TD before running 4 yards for a fourth-quarter score.
It was the Bulldogs' third straight win.
Both of Kampsen's catches went for scores while Bungum also completed 20-yard passes to Caleb Burris and Nathan Meyer to finish 10-for-19 with 147 yards. Bungum nearly averaged 10 yards a carry as he ran 25 times (9.2 average).
Paynesville turned the ball over three times, but the Bulldogs limited the Dutchmen (1-3) to just 11 first downs and 77 rushing yards on 25 carries.
Isaac Sawyer threw for 178 yards for Melrose after completing 15 of 30 pass attempts.
