Burton R. Van Ort

Burton R. Van Ort, 89, of New London, died Monday, April 21, 2014, at St. Cloud Hospital. Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Thursday, April 24th at Hope Presbyterian Church in Spicer, with visitation one hour prior to the service. Burial will be at Minnesota Veterans Cemetery in Little Falls. Arrangements are with the Johnson Funeral Home in New London.

Burton Robert Van Ort was born on July 26, 1924, in Willmar, to John and Mary (Williams) Van Ort. He grew up in Willmar where he attended Willmar High School. He enlisted in the US Army at the age of seventeen on March 5, 1943, and served his country during WWII in the European and African Theaters. He was honorably discharged on February 14, 1946 and returned home. He worked as truck driver and delivery man for Old Dutch Potato in Minnesota and the Dakotas. On January 11, 1967, Burt was united in marriage to Ella Erickson at Our Redeemers Lutheran Church in Benson. They made their home near New London where they enjoyed hobby farming. Burt was a member of Hope Presbyterian Church in Spicer, where he served as a ruling elder. He enjoyed deer hunting and fishing with his nephews and friends.

He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Ella; brother-in-law, William Arnold of Rochester; sisters-in-law, Alice Van Ort of Willmar and Arloueen Van Ort of Litchfield; and numerous nieces and nephews. Burt was preceded in death by his sister, Geneva Arnold; and brothers, Howard, Roger, Jacob, William and Paul.
