Schmid, Bork, Dykema join United Prairie

SPICER -- Michael C. Schmid, Pamela Bork and Luther Dykema have joined the staff at United Prairie Bank of Spicer, announces Todd Erickson, bank president.

"Everyone on staff here is excited about our newcomers,'' said Erickson. "Their solid reputation, professionalism and experience will enhance service to our customers.''

Schmid is the bank's new senior commercial lender and vice president. He moved from the Twin Cities to Spicer 13 years ago and was most recently a commercial lender for a regional Willmar bank. He grew up in Sha-kopee and earned a degree in business management from St. Cloud State University. He and his wife, Lesley, have a son and a daughter.

"I was attracted to United Prairie Bank because it is very community oriented,'' said Schmid. "I believe I'll be in a great position here to serve the financing needs of the business community.''

Bork and Dykema are the bank's investment division team.

Bork, originally from Fond du Lac, Wis., moved to the New London-Spicer area 23 years ago and has worked in financial services for more than a decade. She and her husband, Mike, have two daughters.

"I've really enjoyed helping people in the area with their financial issues,'' said Bork.

Dykema graduated from Danube High School and Minnesota State University Mankato and has been an investment representative in the area for more than 20 years. He has served on boards at Redeemer Lutheran Church in Willmar and on the Willmar Lakes Area Chamber of Commerce Board. He and his wife, Peggy, have two adult daughters.

"I like to take a thorough approach to helping people with their financial planning,'' Dykema said. "I believe in careful financial planning.''

NEXT Financial adds Hofland

WILLMAR -- Jane Hofland has joined the financial advising team of NEXT Financial Group Inc., an independent investment group rated No. 1 as a broker/ dealer by Investment Advisor Magazine. Hofland has moved her practice, Prairie Lakes Area Financial, to the North American Financial Center on Business Highway 71.

Hofland's focus will be based on providing sound, ethical advice to her clients. "This may sound simple, but in today's world many clients are concerned about the ethics of their advisor and the broker-dealer they practice under,'' said Hofland.

"My business principles are to always put the interests of our clients first, and to bring complete satisfaction to each customer's financial goals and aspirations, no matter how large or small,'' she said.

Hofland has over 30 years of experience in the financial industry. She and her family returned to Minnesota in 1994 and she worked in area investment offices, most recently as an independent financial advisor at United Prairie Bank. Hofland and her husband live in the Spicer area.

Rice names new outreach, community relations director

WILLMAR -- Kathleen Sawyer has been named director of outreach and community relations at Rice Memorial Hospital. She began her new position on March 22.

As the director of outreach and community relations, she is responsible for the management and direction of outreach services, public relations and marketing activities.

"I am excited to be a part of Rice Memorial Hospital and look forward to working with a great team of people here and within the community," said Sawyer.

Sawyer has 10 years in business management and six years of experience in marketing and sales. She earned a bachelor of arts degree in business management from the University of Wisconsin at Stout. She is past president of the United Way of West Central Minnesota and past co-chair of the Kandiyohi County Area Family YMCA capital fund committee. Sawyer has received numerous corporate and community awards for excellence, achievement and contribution.

A resident of Willmar since 1999, Sawyer lives with her husband, Jeff, and two children.

Business Awards

* Home Agency Inc. of Kandiyohi was recently named to the Grinnell Mutual Reinsurance Company President's Club for 2010 as a company top agency. Home Agency ranks among the company's top 50 agencies and 15 farm mutual companies for outstanding production and profitability over a five-year period. President's Club members provide insights on key insurance and business issues to board members and management staff from Grinnell Mutual Reinsurance and Grinnell Select Insurance Companies in Grinnell, Iowa. Home Agency agents and staff recently received a plaque and letter of recognition from Grinnell Mutual for the notable achievement.

* Leslie Bauman of Montevideo, accounting instructor at the Granite Falls Campus of Minnesota West Community and Technical College, has been named Minnesota West Teacher of the Year for 2009-2010. Bauman has taught for 24 years. She graduated from Granite Falls Vocational Technical Institute, now Minnesota West, and has a bachelor's degree and master's degree from Bemidji State University. Bauman estimates she has taught nearly 1,400 students and says meeting their diverse needs is challenging and rewarding. Bauman is advisor and advocate for the college's chapter of Business Professionals of America. She has led the Business Professionals of America students to many state and national awards and was voted Minnesota Advisor of the Year. She and her husband, Mike, have seven children.

Education

Dr. Brett Peterson, chiropractic physician and state-certified in acupuncture, at Acupuncture Chiropractic Clinic, 130 Willmar Ave. S.E., Willmar, attended 20 hours of post-graduate continuing education March 20-21 at Northwestern College of Chiropractic/Health Sciences University. Subjects included diagnosis and treatment of back diseases and injuries, and pain management. Emphasis was also placed on posture and alignment of the spine and human frame and how causation of pain, restrictions in movement and decrease in function if uncorrected leads to premature spinal joint decay and arthritis. Training included treatment care of spinal sprain injury, disc herniations and disc injuries, and effects of concussions and head trauma.
