Calvin Martin passed away peacefully surrounded by loved ones on Saturday, February 9, 2013, at age 87. He is preceded in death by his beloved wife of 43 years, Mae.
Calvin Lee Martin was born in Chaffee, North Dakota on July 12, 1925; he was the eldest of eight children of the late William and Ada (Hacke) Martin. He graduated from Chaffee High School in 1943, received a Bachelors degree from North Dakota State University in 1948 and earned a Masters in Public Administration from the Maxwell School, Syracuse University in 1975.
He had an illustrious life of service, adventure and travel. He worked for the Near East Foundation in Rasht, Iran, and then joined the United States Foreign Service with the US Agency for International Development. His 37-year distinguished career as a Foreign Service Officer included overseas postings in Iran, Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, Afghanistan, and Kenya. Upon his retirement in 1990, he consulted with the World Bank, and served as the vice-president of the Annandale, VA chapter of National Association of Retired Federal Employees and as the president of the Fairfax County Senior Citizens Council.
He was a longtime member of the Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Mantua, VA. He is survived by his three daughters, Caroline Szeremeta of Vienna, VA, Kristine Martin of Eden Prairie, MN, Rebecca Martin of Atlanta, GA, sons-in-law, Stephen Szeremeta and Jim Libera, four grandchildren, Peter and Christopher Szeremeta and Annika and Anders Bjerkness; and five brothers and two sisters.

Visitation: Friday, 15 February, from 4-6 PM at the West Funeral Home, West Fargo, ND.
Funeral: Saturday, at St. Peters Lutheran Church in Leonard, ND at 10 a.m.
Burial: Watson Cemetery, Walburg, ND.
