Carol J. Dero May 14, 1929 - March 14, 2009
GLENWOOD -- Carol Jean Dero, 79, of Glenwood died at her home Saturday after a long battle with cancer.
The service will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Glenwood Lutheran Church. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery in Glenwood.
Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. today at Hoplin-Hitchcock Funeral Home in Glenwood and one hour prior to the service at the church. Memorials are preferred to Glenwood and Beyond, P.O. Box 434, Glenwood, MN 56334, Pope County Hospice, 10 Fourth Ave SE, Glenwood, MN 56334, or a charity of the donor's choice.
She was born May 14, 1929, in Minneota to Peter and Hansina (Johansen) Geiwitz. She graduated from Minneota High School and went on to St. Olaf College where she earned a degree in nursing from Fairview Hospital in 1950.
She married Donald Dero on October 5, 1951.
They moved to Glenwood in 1969 where she became the director of nursing at Lakeview Care Center and later worked at the Glenwood Hospital. She previously held nursing positions at Weiner Memorial Hospital in Marshall and the Canby Hospital. She volunteered for hospice, VFW and American Legion Auxiliary and was a member of Glenwood Lutheran Church where she was in the bell choir for several years.
Carol is survived by her children: Susan (and Steve) Vold of Billings, Mont., Doug (and Jill) Dero of Hayden Lake, Idaho, David (and Debra) Dero of Strasburg, Colo., Nancy Dero of Walker, Michael (and Jackie) Dero of Naples, Fla., and Jane (and Randy) Fauskee of Glenwood; 14 grandchildren, two great-grandchildren; and her brother: James Geiwitz (and Renee Woodson) of Saanichton, British Columbia.
She was preceded in death by her husband in 1993.
