Census: Population grows in Kandiyohi Co. and Willmar

Updated: Fixes some percentage figures

WILLMAR -- Kandiyohi County's population grew 2.5 percent while the city of Willmar grew 6.9 percent over the past decade, according to the 2010 U.S. Census.

Willmar narrowly missed breaking the 20,000 level, growing from 18,351 in 2000 to 19,610 in the 2010.

Kandiyohi County grew from 41,203 in 2000 to 42,239 in 2010.

The community losing the biggest population share was Appleton, which lost more than half of its residents. The town's 2010 census was 1,412, compared to 2,871 in the 2000 census.

Population increased in Meeker County by 2.9 percent from 22,644 in 2000 to 23,300 in 2010 and Stearns County jumped 12.9 percent from 133,166 to 150,342.

However, population decreased in six other western Minnesota counties during the 10-year period, according to the Census.

Chippewa County was down 4.9 percent from 13,088 to 12,441.

Lac qui Parle County fell 10 percent from 8,067 to 7,259.

Pope County dipped 2.1 percent from 11,236 to 10,995.

Redwood County declined by 4.5 percent from 16,815 to 16,059.

Swift County lost the greatest percentage over the 10-year period with a 18.2 percent decline from 11,956 to 9,783.

Yellow Medicine County dipped 5.8 percent from 11,080 to 10,438.

Towns in the region making significant gains in the 2010 census include the following:

Atwater jumped 5 percent from 1,079 to 1,133.

Brooten increased 14.5 percent from 649 to 743.

Elrosa grew 27.1 percent from 166 to 211.

Hancock increased 6.7 percent from 717 to 765.

Louisburg ballooned 80.8 percent from 26 to 47.

Milan increased 13.2 percent from 326 to 369.

Morris grew 4.3 percent from 5,068 to 5,286.

New London increased 17.4 percent from 1,066 to 1,251.

Prinsburg jumped 8.5 percent from 458 to 496.

Spicer grew 3.6 percent from 1,126 to 1,167.

Towns suffering double-digit percent declines in the 2010 census include the following:

Belgrade declined 38.4 percent, dropping from 1,033 to 740.

Bird Island dropped 12.8 percent from 1,195 to 1,042.

Blomkest declined 15.6 percent from 186 to 157.

Boyd dropped 16.7 percent from 210 to 175.

Cosmos declined 18.7 percent from 582 to 473.

Danvers dropped 10.2 percent from 108 to 97.

Holloway declined 17.9 percent from 112 to 92.

Kandiyohi dropped 11.5 percent from 555 to 491.

Madison declined 12.3 percent from 1,768 to 1,551.

Regal dropped 15 percent from 40 to 34.

Sedan declined 30.8 percent from 65 to 45.
