Central Lakes avenges loss to Ridgewater

Email

BRAINERD -- The Central Lakes Raiders got payback on Ridgewater Saturday afternoon in a men's junior college basketball game.

Behind the play of their exciting freshman guard Quentin Wilford, the Raiders (7-3) spilled the Warriors (8-6) 71-64.

That avenged a hotly-contested 81-78 loss to the Warriors at Willmar a week earlier.

"We worked hard and played sound defense," said Ridgewater coach Bob Knutson. "But (Central Lakes) was waiting for us. I think this time they put more pressure on our perimeter."

The loss wasted another big game from freshman forward Casey Sussenguth. The 6-7 freshman from Willmar tossed in a game high-high 26 points, making on 10-of-17 shots from the field.

Sussenguth had 24 points in the first meeting.

Cory Nietfeld added 15 points and Derek Eisenschenk 11. Ben Moser got in foul trouble early and was limited to four points. Sophomore post Tom Boike, hobbled by a sprained ankle, didn't score but still proved valuable defensively.

Shawn Neu helped out with six points and Beau Bredeson distributed the ball and was credited with eight assists.

Wilford, a six-footer from Chicago who is hard to defend, supplied four assists and three steals to go with his 18 points, two more than he had at Willmar. The Raiders beat MSCTC-Fergus Falls 69-59 on Friday.

Knutson said he likes the way the team played through the non-conference season. The Warriors open MCAC play Jan. 7 at Riverland College of Austin.
