City Council to consider filling fire chief/fire marshal vacancy

WILLMAR -- The Willmar City Council on Monday night will consider a Labor Relations Committee recommendation to fill the vacancy that will be created when Fire Chief/Fire Marshal Marv Calvin resigns, effective Thursday.

City Administrator Charlene Stevens recommended to the committee that the position be filled on a full-time basis. Calvin has held the full-time position since 2000. Stevens has estimated that up to 120 days would be needed to find a replacement.

In related business, the Labor Relations Committee will recommend the council appoint deputy fire chief Jeff Gilbertson as acting chief and acting fire marshal until the chief/fire marshal position is filled.

Also, the committee will recommend Don Ericson, Kandiyohi County emergency management coordinator, be appointed Willmar's interim emergency management coordinator.

In other business, the council will consider the recommendation of the Community Development Committee to reduce the price of land in the new industrial park third addition from $1.50 to $1.25 per square foot to reflect current decreasing land values.

The committee will also recommend the council introduce an ordinance dealing with the care and keeping of animals for a hearing Aug. 20.

Among other agenda items, the council will receive a presentation from Christie Kurth, executive director of the Willmar Area Food Shelf.
