City sprays wet areas for mosquitoes
WILLMAR -- During the past two months, the city Public Works Department has been spraying mosquito larvicide in areas where grass and cattails are standing along the edges of stormwater impoundment areas as part of Willmar's annual mosquito control program.
The department has five employees who are state-certified to apply pesticide. One of those is heavy equipment operator Richard Doll, who was spraying Thursday in the Vos Park area.
Public Works Superintendent Ron Gilbertson says spraying should be completed shortly.
"Earlier there were a lot of areas that didn't have water in them that they probably do now,'' said Gilbertson. "If you do the edges, you catch them.''
The city has had a mosquito control program in place since 2003 that includes spraying for mosquitoes throughout the summer and also applying larvicide at catch basins where mosquitoes like to breed.
