Clarence S. Jones Sept. 30, 1919 - March 6, 2009
STARBUCK -- Clarence S. Jones, 89, of Starbuck died Friday at the Stevens Community Medical Center in Morris.
The service will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Fron Lutheran Church in Starbuck. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday at the Starbuck Funeral Home in Starbuck and for one hour prior to services at the church.
He was born Sept. 30, 1919, in Humbolt, Ariz., to Arthur and Frances (Blaylock) Jones. He grew up in Humbolt and graduated in 1938 from Prescott High School in Prescott, Ariz. He joined the National Guard in 1937 and was called into the Army in 1940. He was involved in eight campaigns: Sicily, Naples-Foggia, Roma-Arno, Anzio, Southern France, Ardennes, Rhineland and Central Europe, receiving an honorable discharged in 1945. He re-enlisted in 1949 and served in Alaska and Korea and later in Phoenix, Ariz.
He married Elsie Hanson on March 16, 1955, in Phoenix. They lived in Germany and Kansas until he was assigned to Waukegan, Ill., as an ROTC instructor at the high school. Upon retiring from the Army in 1967, he worked for the school system in Waukegan, until moving to Starbuck in 1983. In 2006, he moved to the Minnewaska Lutheran Home where he lived until his death.
He is survived by his children: David Jones of Beach Park, Ill, Jeanne (and Lou) Milewski of Boulder Junction, Wis., Lori (and Paul) Gruenwald of Gresham, Ore., and Jan (and Wayne) Slusher of Silverdale, Wash.; one daughter-in-law: Marie Jones of Beach Park, Ill.; and 11 grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, two brothers and two sisters, one in infancy.
