PRINSBURG -- With participatory numbers declining, Central Minnesota Christian School in Prinsburg has decided not to have a varsity baseball or softball program this spring.

"We just don't have the numbers we need to put those teams on the field," said CMCS athletic director Daryl VanderWell. "We will still have a JV baseball team this spring that will follow the varsity schedule."

CMCS has had baseball since 1988, but only four seniors, two juniors and two freshmen showed interest in playing this season. Two of the seniors had not played since junior high. The team will allow the juniors and seniors to play with the JV team, but will also have to fill in with seventh and eighth graders.

The softball team, which has been a spring sport at CMCS since 1993, had no juniors or seniors sign up to play this season. There were five sophomore that played last year, but all decided not to participate this spring.

"We only had six or seven junior high kids that showed interest in playing," VanderWell said. "So we won't even have a JV team for softball."

CMCS had boys and girls track last season with limited participation, but will again have those teams with a modest schedule of five or six meets. Prinsburg does not have a track that would enabled it to host meets.

"We've got good numbers in grades seven through twelve," VanderWell said. "Maybe we can get the baseball and softball numbers up again next year and bring those sports back, too."
