Cogelow woodcarving exhibits scheduled in Atwater, Minn.
ATWATER -- ARTmeyerson Gallery presents "A Penny Saved," a show of woodcarvings by Fred Cogelow, from 1 to 5 p.m. Friday and 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Saturday.
There will be an evening reception from 6:30 to 11 p.m. Friday with music by Jerry Ostensoe and The Strollers.
Cogelow, a Willmar woodcarver, took top honors with "A Penny Saved" last week at the 45th annual International Woodcarvers Congress in Maquoketa, Iowa. His sole entry was a life-size statue based on photographic studies of Zona Niece, also of Willmar. It bested a field of 500-plus entries from the U.S. and Canada, including entries by several of his former top competitors who resurfaced after a decade's absence.
Among the 27 pieces on exhibit will be both early and recent works, along with a number of carvings that have never been publicly shown. Included with be a Best of Show relief from the 2010 carving competitions "Betty Spies," and from private collections "Maddening Disposition," "Department of Homeland Security," "White Man's Burden #1 (Building Democracy)," a.k.a, "Army Mother/Son of a Gun," "Wrong Arm of The Law," "(Gunder and Swen,) The Knuteson Twins" and "Long Arm of the Law," (a.k.a., "Ned's Nemesis").
Following this weekend's showings at ARTmeyerson, some of Cogelow's works will be displayed at the Atwater State Bank through mid-July.
