College baseball: Stingers sign three players
WILLMAR — The Willmar Stingers have made their first new additions to the 2013 roster, locking up a catcher, infielder and pitcher in moves announced Wednesday.
The moves have a west coast flavor, with shortstop Logan Davis and pitcher Max Homick out of the University of San Diego, and Seattle University catcher Brian Olson.
They will join returning players Michael Suchy, Brady Anderson, Max Kuhn, Steven Brault and Karl Sorensen on the 2013 team.
Davis, a junior, was a 38th round pick of the Colorado Rockies in the 2010 MLB draft. He attended Hofstra University and played in 44 games as a freshman in the spring of 2011 before transferring to Chandler-Gilbert (Ariz.) Community College. For Chandler-Gilbert in 2012, he batted .321 with a .374 on-base percentage and was 36-for-38 in stolen base attempts.
He is the son of 1989 National League Cy Young winner Mark Davis.
The University of San Diego has provided the Stingers with solid talent in previous years in Dillon Haupt (2012) and Jack Shannon (2011).
They will try to continue that trend with Davis and 6-foot-3 left-hander Max Homick.
The sophomore struggled as a freshman for USD in the spring with a 7.24 ERA in 27-1/3 innings, but turned in a nice performance in summer ball for the Danville (Ind.) Dans of the Prospect League. He posted a 3.49 ERA with 37 strikeouts in 46-1/3 innings for Danville.
He is also listed as a first baseman and outfielder for USD, though he only had one at-bat in 2012.
He was an alternate for USA Baseball’s 18U National Team in 2009, a team which included 2012 National League Rookie of the Year Bryce Harper. He was also named a 3rd Team Preseason All-American by Perfect Game USA in 2011 coming out of Rancho Bernardo (Calif.) High School.
Olson was named an Honorable Mention Preseason All-American that same year for Tahoma (Wash.) High School.
He was the starting catcher for Seattle last spring and held his own, hitting .276 with two home runs and 18 RBIs in 152 at-bats.
The Stingers open the 2013 season May 29 against Thunder Bay at Bill Taunton Stadium.
