College football: Bird Island’s Jacobs joins SMSU HOF
MARSHALL — Bird Island native Jason Jacobs will be inducted into the Southwest Minnesota State University Athletics Hall of Honor on Saturday, Jan. 26, 2013.
After graduating from BOLD High School, Jacobs was a four-year letterwinner for the football program as a defensive lineman from 1996-99. He played in 42 career games, was a two-time first team All-NSIC honoree and amed the 1998 NSIC Defensive Player of the Year.
Other honors included first team Daktronics All-Region in 1999, named the 1999 NSIC Glen Galligan Award winner as the conference’s top football senior student-athlete and 1999 second team CoSIDA Academic All-American.
The two-time Football Gazette second team All-American holds the school career record for tackles for loss with 58, ranks second in school history with 28 quarterback sacks, ranks fifth in school history in total tackles with 286 and holds the school single-season record with 19 tackles for loss in 1999. Jacobs helped lead team to a winning record in 1999, just the seventh in the program’s history.
The induction ceremony will take place at the SMSU Conference Center.
A 10-member committee chose five athletes, one coach, three community members and a championship volleyball team from a group of nominations. The new inductees bring the membership in SMSU’s Athletic Hall of Honor to 78 individuals/couples and 11 teams.
