College Football: Warriors don't play well', but still beat Vermilion

ELY — Martell Baker ran for 135 yards and two touchdowns and Ridgewater scored twice thanks to Vermilion mistakes in 28-7 MCAC victory on Saturday.

The Warriors improved to 2-0 but coach Rob Baumgarn said his team needs to play better if it hopes to build on their record.

“We didn’t play very well,” Baumgarn said. “We played very sluggish on all aspects of the game.  We never got going.”

The Warriors opened the scoring on Wes Oswald’s 31-yard scoring pass to Kevin Parks.

Later, a bad snap on a Vermilion punt set up Baker’s 2-yard touchdown run.

Parks and Oswald hooked up on a 32-yard screen play to the Vermilion five yard line and Baker punched it in from there.

Ridgewater’s Mickey McGuire recovered a Vermilion fumble to help set up Beau Strough’s 14-yard TD pass from quarterback Trevor Nystrom.

Vermilion played well and the game could have been closer were it not for its miscues, Baumgarn said.

“We capitalized on Vermilions mistakes,” Baumgarn said, “but I will give them credit: they are a better team in the past.  We need to get back to the basics of blocking and tackling.”
