WILLMAR — Ridgewater cranked up the power Thursday by jolting Fergus Falls 9-5 and 14-2 in a MCAC South doubleheader that featured two Ridgewater grand slams in the Warriors’ home opener.

A nine-run fifth inning that was highlighted by Brenna Holwerda’s three-run homer got the job done for Ridgewater in the opener. The Warriors then pounded out 18 hits — including grand slams from Holwerda and Brooke Carlson — in the second game to improve to 2-2 in the conference and 7-6 overall.

Ridgewater, which played yesterday for the first time in three weeks, hosts Minnesota West today at 3 p.m.

The Bluejays beat Ridgewater 11-3 and 11-8 in a doubleheader on April 3 in Worthington after Ridgewater beat them 13-5 on March 22 at the Irish Sports Dome in Rosemount.

Game One

Ridgewater 9, Fergus Falls 5

Ridgewater sent up 14 batters to the plate in the fifth and got eight hits. Holwerda and Brittany Nissen both recorded two hits in the frame with one of Nissen’s singles driving in two runs.

Carlson and Alicia Koenen also drove in a pair of runs for the Warriors, who outhit Fergus Falls 11-5. Megan Cole drove in all five runs for the Spartans after belting a grand slam, doubling twice and reaching on a single.

Nissen worked all seven innings in the circle to earn the win. She gave up just one earned run and shook off issuing four walks by striking out six.

Game Two

Ridgewater 14, Fergus Falls 2

The Warriors broke a 2-2 tie by getting a grand slam from Carlson and plating five runs in the fourth. Ridgewater then added insurance in the sixth when 11 batters came to the plate to produce seven runs behind Holwerda’s grand slam and six other hits.

Jess Kalenberg doubled twice and singled twice to knock in a couple of runs for Ridgewater. Nissen and Holwerda added three hits each while Carlson, Kari Shipman and Justine Otremba had two each.

Kalenberg also earned the win after surrendering just two hits and two runs while striking out five in five innings of work.
