College Volleyball: Warriors take 2 at Ridgewater Classic

WILLMAR -- It wasn't easy, but the Ridgewater volleyball team began defense of its NJCAA Division III national championship by winning two games on Friday in the season-opening Ridgewater Classic.

Ridgewater had its hands full with Ellsworth, which pushed the Warriors to five games before falling.

The Warriors won in three games over Dawson of Montana but two of thre three games were close.

Veterans Kelsey Stommes and Cassie Ziemer, along with freshman setter Tiffani Karbo, led Ridgewater on Friday.

Stommes, a sophomore from Cold Spring, led the Warriors with 22 kills in the two matches while Ziemer, a sophomore from New London, added 16. Stommes also had 7 ace blocks and Ziemer 4.

Freshman Alex Horton, of Maple Grove, was good on 34 of 38 shots and had 11 kills while Kelci Viesselman, a sophomore returner from Hutchinson, had 10 kills and another area prep star, sophomore Brittany Nissen, of Olivia, had 7 kills.

Karbo had 67 set assists in the two matches.

Ziemer led Ridgewater with 33 of 34 serving and 7 aces, while Morgan Meyer, a freshman from Watkins, Karbo, Horton and Viesselman all had 4 aces.
