College Wrestling: Rochester rocks Warriors
WILLMAR — For first-year Warriors’ head coach Tom Gruhlke, his first winter at Ridgewater is a time for learning the ropes of college wrestling.
“I’ve got to get out there and recruit and get the numbers up,” said the long-time high school coach, who took over for Tom Beyer last fall.
Injuries, personal matters and academic trouble can reduce a full wrestling room in October to a handful of hail and healthy wrestlers by mid-winter.
The Warriors (4-2) fell hard to MCAC rival Rochester (12-3) on Thursday 40-16 at the college. The home team forfeited at four weights.
One wrestler, Gruhlke explained, couldn’t get out of a night class (matches on Thursday night are uncommon).
Another is temporarily out with a nagging injury. At the middle weights, Gruhlke lost one athlete to a shoulder surgery and another ended up a credit short of being eligible second term.
Picking up wins were Matt Meyer at 149 with an 8-1 decision and Zane Petersen at 285 pounds with a 2:33 pin. Those wins will help each Warrior in the seeding at region.
