College wrestling: Steinhaus gets key win for Gophers
The No. 3 ranked Minnesota Gophers wrestling team had all it could handle Saturday at the Sports Pavilion against No. 15 Oregon State.
U of M trailed 15-13 with 3 weights left when former KMS wrestler Kevin Steinhaus, ranked No. 3 at 184, scored a 22-7 tech fall over Ty Vinson to put the Gophers up 18-15.
With the score tied 18-18, No. 1-ranked heavyweight Tony Nelson faced No. 6 Chad Hanke. The match went 5 overtime periods before Nelson was declared the winner due to 0:08 seconds of accumulated riding time for a 21-18 Gophers’ win.
Minnesota will take a break from action for the holidays and will return for the Southern Scuffle in Chattanooga, Tenn. on Jan. 1.
