College wrestling: Van Heuveln falls short of top eight at nationals

DES MOINES, Iowa — Klinton Van Heuveln at 141 pounds was one win shy of securing All-America status Friday at the NJCAA National Championships.
The Ridgewater College sophomore and 2012 Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg High School graduate lost a 4-1 decision in overtime in the fourth round of the consolation bracket to Tyler Lashbrook of Ellsworth Community College to fall just short of finishing in the top eight for the second consecutive year.
Van Heuveln also fell in the fourth round of the 149-pound loser’s bracket last year at the national tournament in Rochester, Minn.
Van Heuveln received a first-round bye before pinning Blake Santi of Harper College in 5:42 to reach the quarterfinals. Van Heuvlen was then dropped into the consolation bracket after being edged 4-2 by Zach Loveless of Wyoming’s Northwest College.
Also advancing to Friday’s second session for Ridgewater was sophomores Tyrell Martin at 165 and Trevor Mahlum at 174. Martin fell 5-3 and Mahlum 6-3 in their third-round matches in the consolation bracket. Both of Martin’s wins were by pin while Mahlum notched a pin and a 5-3 decision.
Winning a match before eventually being eliminated for Ridgewater were freshmen Frank Wilczek at 133 and Brady Thisius at 184, and sophomore heavyweight Zane Petersen.
