Commentary: Support veterans in words and action
Willmar Minnesota 2208 Trott Ave. SW / P.O. Box 839 56201

As American soldiers continue to serve in Iraq and Afghanistan, Veterans Day this year takes on even more significance. This annual observance serves as an opportunity for all of us to publicly say "thank you" for the sacrifices of activeduty military, their families, and the 430,000 living veterans in Minnesota who served in wars past.

We must show our support for veterans in both words and actions. This session, I worked to make Minnesota friendlier to veterans, active-duty military personnel and their families by

helping to pass several provisions that will make their lives better. Members of the Minnesota National Guard will now receive 100 percent tuition reimbursement; $500,000 has been designated for outreach to underserved veterans, including veterans of color, female veterans, and veterans of limited financial means; $670,000 has been designated for a World War II memorial on the Capitol grounds; new "Support Our Troops" license plates are available, with proceeds going to military families and veterans' organizations, and $5.4 million has been designated for construction and upkeep at state veterans' homes.

I am very pleased to have played a role in passing this important legislation. This Veterans Day, let's all take the time to thank the veterans, service members and their families for all that they have done and continue to do for our country.

Aaron Peterson is the state representative for District 20A.
