Community Foundation awards more than $44K in grants

WILLMAR -- The Willmar Area Community Foundation announces it awarded grants to eight local nonprofit organizations in its spring grant round to support key community programs. The foundation, an affiliate of the Central Minnesota Community Foundation, awarded a total of $44,500.

The largest grant of $12,000 will allow the United Way of Kandiyohi County to expand its innovative Growmobile Summer Program that serves at-risk children under age 5 and their families.

Last year, the Growmobile provided a preschool experience to 180 children a week during the summer and 120 families through the school year who otherwise would not have one.

The eight grant recipients are:

- Willmar Community Senior Network, to coordinate services to seniors, $10,000.

- West Central Industries, for Willmar summer program for teens, $2,000.

- The Arc of Minnesota in St. Paul, to start Kandiyohi County chapter, $5,000.

- Safe Avenues in Willmar, for computers and software, $8,000.

- Prairie Woods Environmental Learning Center in Spicer, for challenge course equipment, $2,500.

- Let's Go Fishing in Willmar, for intergenerational activities, $2,000.

- Willmar Design Center in Willmar, to support Becker Market, $3,000.

- United Way of Kandiyohi County, for Growmobile Summer Program, $12,000.
