Concerts, exhibits, open houses fill the season

The holiday season brings many special events. From family gatherings to school concerts and church programs, there are many events in which people may choose to participate. Listed are several concerts, festivals and other events set for the coming weeks.

Today

- The Litchfield Area Male Chorus presents a Christmas concert at 7:30 p.m. at Bernie Aaker Auditorium, 114 N. Holcombe Ave., Litchfield; freewill donation.

Today-Saturday

- The Barn Theatre presents "Plaid Tidings" at 7:30 p.m. at the theater in Willmar. Tickets are $15 for adults and $8 for students. Box office open 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays; call 320-235-9500.

Friday-Sunday

- The Southwest Minnesota State University planetarium presents it Christmas show "Mystery of the Christmas Star" at 7 p.m. Dec. 18-19, 3 p.m. Dec. 20 and 1 p.m. Dec. 24. The planetarium, located in SM 108 on the Marshall campus, seats 82 people. A second show will be given if the first one sells out. Admission is $5 for adults, $3 under 12.

Saturday

- Bake sales will be held from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Kandi Mall in Willmar. Churches, schools, nonprofit groups and organizations participating are Harvest Community, Living Word Lutheran, Word of Faith, First Baptist, Willmar Area Scholars at Home, Bridges of Hope and impact Girls Club.

- A holiday face painting story hour for ages 3 through 10 will be at 10 a.m. at the Willmar Public Library, 410 Fifth St. S.W. Patricia Roberts will be painting faces, and children will make holiday decorations and crafts. The dairy princesses will serve dairy treats.

- A Christmas celebration will begin at 3 p.m. at the historic Salem Community Church four miles north of Paynesville on 220th Street. Sleigh rides pulled by real reindeer will be given from 3 to 4:15 p.m. with the Christmas program, "Because He Lives," to be presented at 4:30 p.m. Those attending are invited to bring children's gifts and canned goods to be placed under the tree for the food shelf and community families in need. A freewill donation will be collected for the Historic Salem Church restoration fund. Christmas goodies will be served, and bags available for guests.

Sunday

- "Christmas at Sperry House" is open from 2 to 5 p.m. in the partially restored 1893 home. The home is decorated for Christmas and the tree displays a variety of 1800s (Victorian) ornaments. Cider and cookies will be served. The Sperry House, part of the Kandiyohi County Historical Society, is located just west of the museum on North Business Highway 71 in Willmar. It is open by appointment during the week. Admission is free.

- Santa will be visiting the American Legion in Willmar at 2 p.m. Bring the kids, there will be entertainment by magician Tom Whitcomb along with coffee and cookies.

- A Service of Lessons and Carols will be at 3:30 p.m. by the choirs at Vinje Lutheran Church, 1101 Willmar Ave S.W., in Willmar. It will be followed by a potluck Christmas reception.

- Christmas Jazz concert featuring the George Maurer Group at 7 p.m. at Faith Lutheran Church in Spicer. Coffee and cookies will be served following the concert; freewill offering.

Sunday-Wednesday

- The "Festive Forest" at the Kandiyohi County Historical Society Museum, 610 Business Highway 71 N.E. in Willmar, shows holiday trees created by local clubs and organizations. The display will be open from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. Admission is free.

Tuesday

- The Rose Ensemble presents "And Glory Shone Around: Early American Balads, Hymns, Dances and Spiritual Songs" at 7:30 p.m. at Bethel Lutheran Church, 411 Becker Ave. S.W., in Willmar. Tickets are $12 for adults and $9 for students and seniors and are available at the door; children 10 and under are admitted free.

Wednesday

- The annual Lillejulaften (Little Christmas Eve) Norwegian language worship service will be at 7 p.m. at Calvary Lutheran Church, 302 Olena Ave., in Willmar. The service will feature Norwegian scripture readings, prayers and songs. The service folder will be in Norwegian with a full English translation. Those with Norwegian sweaters and/or bunads are asked to wear them.

Dec. 24

- Tonic Sol-Fa holiday concert at 7:30 p.m. at WEAC in Willmar. Tickets are $23 and are available at North American State Bank, Bremer Bank, LuLu Bean's and Cash Wise Foods in Willmar.

Dec. 31

- A New Year's Eve Soiree story hour for ages 3 through 10 will be at 2 p.m. at the Willmar Public Library, 410 Fifth St. S.W. They will be reading stories and doing activities featuring Fancy Nancy books; dress in your fanciest clothes and tiaras are welcome.
