County Park 3 access to Diamond Lake closed by sheriff, unsafe ice conditions

WILLMAR -- The access point at County Park 3 onto Diamond Lake has been closed to motor vehicle traffic due to very poor ice conditions.

According to Kandiyohi County Sheriff Dan Hartog, the sheriff's office received a report about the ice conditions around 1:30 p.m. today and deputies determined that the ice would not be able to support motor vehicles coming on to and off of the lake at the access point on the west side of the lake.

The access is barricaded and there is yellow tape marking the weak area of ice, Hartog said.

It appears that the ice sheet heaved and the water below the sheet overflowed, creating about a foot of slush. Reports are that there is visible movement of the ice when a vehicle passes over that area, Hartog said.

The barricades will remain in place until the ice conditions improve.

An ice heave, on the southeast portion of Diamond Lake, caused a vehicle to partially submerge in the lake on Wednesday afternoon.
