Cross Country: LQPV/DB girls 2nd at Class A meet
NORTHFIELD — It’s not that the Lac qui Parle Valley/Dawson-Boyd cross country program doesn’t have state medals to show for its efforts.
Carrie Tollefson won five straight individual championships 1990-94 (two in Class AA) and Nikki Swenson was twice champion and twice runner-up 2003-06.
But there had never been a team trophy — until Saturday.
The girls team composed of Blackjacks and Eagles from the adjoining school districts took second place in Class A.
It was the 22nd running on the lower grounds of St. Olaf College.
“I think we were underrated,” said Kelly Kvaal, the team’s No. 2 runner.
Indeed. Sixth-rated, the Section 3A champs surpassed everyone but Annandale, which logged 85 points to 113 for the runners-up.
“We felt Annandale was out of reach, but thought we could finish as high as second if everything fell into place,” said John Shrub, a Madison native who has helmed the program since 1997.
It’s a team with a future. Alaysia Freetly, a junior, ran 22nd overall. Then, in a three-pack starting at 24th place came freshman Sadie Thompson, sophomore Kvaal and freshman Sydney Bartunek. Seventh grader Grace Heglund came in 32nd.
Conditions were near ideal for the 800 runners who competed in the races. Crowds were huge, as usual, voicing encouragement for even the last runners in each field.
Among Class A individuals, senior Savannah Ramirez earned All-State honors a second year in a row with an 18th place. Freetly also is All-State. Bethany Rosemeier of Benson/KMS placed 26th missing out on an All-State certificate by one place and two-tenths of a second.
