Hanson ran the 4K race in 15:58 and Rudie completed the course in 16:02. Trailing the two for Willmar was senior Cassandra Johnson (16:04) in sixth, junior Tara Rudie (16:19) in ninth and eighth-grader Savannah Anez (16:28) in 10th. Sophie Schmitz, another eighth-grader, had the sixth-best time for Willmar (18:23) to place 40th among 52 runners.

The Willmar boys were fourth -- 45 points behind front-runner Bemidji -- with junior Tom Seifert placing fifth at 17:04 on the 5K course. Junior Sam Anez (12th) and freshman Ian Thompson (20th) also finished in the top 20.

"We ran in a pack right from the start and just held on," said Willmar coach Jerry Popp on his girls team. "The summer miles really showed up today. (The boys) had a very good race; we got beat by some deep and solid teams and will have our work cut out for us to repeat as state qualifier."
