Dam weakened in Olmsted Co. community

ORONOCO, Minn. - A dam weakened by torrential rain has caused some residents of a small southeastern Minnesota community to evacuate.

Olmsted County Sheriff's Chief Deputy Mark Darnell said Friday the water is still rising on the Zumbro River in Oronoco.

Darnell says residents of more than a dozen homes around the dam have been evacuated to a Red Cross shelter in Rochester, which is south of the community of about 900.

Darnell says roads are closed around the area because of the powerful storm system that drenched southern Minnesota. He says the integrity of Oronoco's dam is weak, but so far has held.
