Daniel E. Besonen May 10, 1939 - March 7, 2009

MADISON -- Daniel Edward Besonen, 69, of Madison, died Saturday in Sioux Falls, S.D.

The service will be at 10:30 a.m. today at Faith Lutheran Church of Madison. Burial will be in Hayden Cemetery in Madison. Arrangements are by Zahrbock Funeral Chapel in Madison.

He was born on May 10, 1939 in Litchfield to John and Ida (Johnson) Besonen. He went to school in Litchfield, graduating in 1957. He was a professional pitcher for New York and the San Francisco Giants baseball organization until 1959. He attended St. Cloud State University and received his teaching degree.

He married Ethel Weisbeck in 1967 in Aberdeen, S.D. He taught in Java, S.D., for six years before moving to Madison in 1970. He taught and coached baseball, football, basketball, track and golf until his retirement in 2000. He also continued to coach golf and teach driver education until his death.

He was a member of Faith Lutheran Church.

He is survived by his wife; two sons; Barry (and Alyssa) Besonen of Willmar and Brant (and Samantha) Besonen of Lester, Iowa; four grandchildren; siblings: Donna Denny of Alexandria, Donald (and Elaine) Besonen of Litchfield, Phil (and Joan) Besonen of Fayetteville, Ark., Jim (and Lorraine) Besonen of Minnetonka and John (and Carol) Besonen of Tucson, Ariz.
