ALEXANDRIA -- Darrel Merlin Henke, 72, of Glenwood died Monday at Douglas County Hospital in Alexandria.
The service will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Chippewa Falls Lutheran Church in Terrace. Burial will be in Chippewa Falls Lutheran Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Hoplin-Hitchcock Funeral Home in Glenwood and for one hour prior to the service at the church.
He was born March 25, 1937, in Youngtown, N.D., to William and Esther (Scherer) Henke. He grew up on a farm near Youngtown and attended county school. In 1954, he entered the U.S. Army, serving until his honorable discharge in 1956. He returned home to work on the family farm and on the road construction on Interstate 94.
He married Jeanette Kuhn on June 4, 1959, in Hanover, N.D. The very next day they moved to a farm they purchased near Sedan and made it their home. In addition to farming, he hauled milk and drove school bus.
He was a member of Chippewa Falls Lutheran Church near Terrace, where he was on the church council and cemetery board. He was also a member of the township board and the Glenwood American Legion.
He is survived by his wife; sons: Bill Henke and David (and Angie) Henke of Glenwood; four grandchildren; siblings: Aldean Henke and Margie Kjeldahl, all of Glenwood.
