Darrell Charles Tufto, 80, of Bemidji passed away Saturday, March 15, 2014 at his winter home in Mission, TX.
Funeral Services will be 10:30 am Friday, March 21, 2014 at the St. Philips Catholic Church in Bemidji, MN with Father Adam Hamness officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church.
A second Mass will be celebrated 11:00 am Tuesday, March 25, 2014 at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church in Renville, MN at with Father Dennis Labat officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church.
Interment will be at the Fairview Cemetery in Renville, MN under the direction of the Cease Family Funeral Home of Bemidji.
Darrell was born February 15, 1934 to Ole A. and Emma (Luth) Tufto on their farm in Sacred Heart Township, Renville County, MN. He grew up on the farm attending District 15 South Country School and graduated as Salutatorian from Renville High School in 1951. He married his wife of 57 years Donna Marie Anderson on February 2, 1957.
After his fathers death in 1949, he farmed with his older brother Edmund until drafted into the U.S. Army in 1957. He worked for Control Data Corp. in Minneapolis, Redwood Falls, Rapid City, SD, and Bemidji, MN until retiring from CDC in 1989 as Director of Manufacturing/Engineering. Since retiring he has managed the family farm which is now in conservation programs except for several acres where gravel is mined. Darrell and Donna live in their historic home on the lake in Bemidji, MN but have spent winters in Sebring, Florida and Mission, Texas for many years.
Darrell was a member of St. Phillips Catholic Church in Bemidji, MN and Our Lady of Guadalupe, Mission, TX, The Benevolent & Protective Order of Elks, and Jr. Chamber of Commerce, and the Lions Club in Bemidji, MN. He was proud of his Norwegian heritage, and enjoyed returning to the Minnesota River Valley farm and to visit the neighbors of South Sacred Heart. He shared his knowledge of the family history with the extended family with pictures and stories at Family Reunions. Darrell loved to fish, hunt, and various activities at the Valley Del Sol RV Park in Mission, TX. He was an active participant and coordinator there.
Darrell is survived by his wife Donna, son Matthew Tufto of Bemidji, MN, granddaughter Jill Goulding, Kansas City, MO, sisters Dorothy (Tufto) Dahl, Northfield, MN and Joyce (Tufto) Kelly and husband Jim, Ashburn, VA, brothers Leighton Tufto, New London, MN and Gerald Tufto and wife Judy, Parker, CO, sister-in-law Mary (Palmer) Tufto, Green Valley, AZ and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his son Mark and wife Mary, Bemidji, MN, baby sister Carol Ann, and brother Edmund Tufto, Kimberling City, MO and his parents Emma and Ole Tufto.
