Darrell Gulsvig Jan. 5, 1939 - Nov. 9, 2008
STARBUCK -- Darrell Allen Gulsvig, 69, died Sunday at St. Joseph's Hospital in St. Paul.
The service will be at 11 a.m. today at Fron Lutheran Church in Starbuck. Military rites will be provided by the Benson VFW.
Visitation will be for one hour prior to the services at the church. Arrangements are with Starbuck Funeral Home.
He was born Jan. 5, 1939, in Glenwood to Alvin and Gladys (Davidson) Gulsvig. The family lived in several communities through 1945. While attending grade school, he lived with his grandparents in Benson. He attended Starbuck High School and Edison High School in Minneapolis. He joined the U.S. Navy and served aboard the aircraft carrier USS Essex until his discharge in 1959.
He worked on the Halls and Jacobson farms, hauled canned milk, hauled live stock for Roy Berens and drove heavy equipment. He worked at Tyler Manufacturing in Benson for nine years.
He married Katherine Ruplinger on May 1, 1965, in Benson. They lived in Benson and he worked for the City of Benson for 30 years in the maintenance department, retiring in 2001. They moved to Starbuck in 2002. He was a member of Fron Lutheran Church in Starbuck where he did volunteer work. He served as commander of the Benson VFW and was a certified driver to transport Let's Go Fishing participants.
He is survived by his wife; children: Corey (and Danielle) Gulsvig of St. Cloud and Heidi (and Brett) Erickson of Starbuck; three grandchildren; siblings: Ray (and Bonnie) Gulsvig of Glenwood, Glenn (and Delores) Gulsvig of Bloomington, Richard (and Judy) Gulsvig of Chandler, Ariz., and Paul Gulsvig of Minneapolis, Marlene (and Allan) Halls of Brooten and Marsha Gulsvig of New Hope and stepmother: Helen Gulsvig of Minneapolis.
