SAN JOSE, Calif. -- David Allen Underland, 59, formerly of Willmar, died Nov. 16 in Thailand from injuries suffered in a fall while working on a roof.

The service was Jan. 17 in California.

He was born Feb. 4, 1949, in Willmar to Bernie and Theodora (Terick) Underland. He grew up in Willmar and spent some time traveling before joining the Navy.

He married Supawan "Sue" on Jan. 25, 1973, after meeting her while stationed near Ubon Ratchathani, Thailand. They were transferred to Italy and then to Maryland. He retired from the Navy in 1978 and went to work for Rockwell International. He spent a short time teaching at a small vocational-technical school before rejoining Rockwell in 1982. They lived all across the United States in the next 12 years eventually living in San Jose, Calif., where he retired from Rockwell in 1994. He worked for a series of small computer companies until he started his own business designing computer circuit boards. They retired in 2006 and moved to Thailand where they had built a home on family land. He taught English to the local village children.

He is survived by his wife; two children: Susana of San Jose, Calif., and Norman (and Jasmine) of Roseville, Calif.; two grandchildren; brothers: Loren Underland of Willmar and Gary (and Carol) Underland of Grove City; and a sister: Nancy (and Dave) Plath of Alexandria.

He was preceded in death by one brother.
