In defense of Scott Wagar

I'd like to make a few comments in defense of Scott Wagar. I've known him for several years, but I can honestly say I've never heard anyone say anything negative about him. I've also heard it said that he's a deeply religious person, which should lend to his credibility.

A large number of letters favoring Wagar have appeared on this page. The vast majority of them, I might add, have been in his defense. It appears as though, at least in this case, that the long arm of the law may have overreached a bit by charging Wagar with three misdemeanors.

Based on what little I know about this case, I'd like to reiterate what Joel Taylor and Brent Roelofs had to say in their letters in Wednesday's edition of the Tribune. Taylor states that the youngsters who were harassing Wagar would have been treated much differently in Arizona. In my opinion, these "kids" should consider themselves fortunate in the fact that they chose a decent man like Scott Wagar to harass.

Instead of being sprayed with harmless fox urine, they could have just as easily have been sprayed with pellets from a 12-gauge shotgun. Had that been the case, another innocent man would most likely be spending the rest of his life behind bars. There's an old adage that says, "Criminals are made, not born." How true that would have been in this case.

In my opinion, I'd like to see the charges against Wagar dismissed in their entirety. In addition, I maintain that Wagar should also receive an apology from all parties involved.

As I understand it, the kids who perpetrated this act had been warned several times to stop harassing Wagar. However, it seems as though they continued to harass him until he couldn't take it any longer.

In closing, I see that John Tradup has started a fund for Wagar's legal expenses. With Tradup's permission, I'd like to repeat the name and address where you can send your contributions. The address is: Scott Wagar Defense Fund, Lake Region Bank, P.O. Box 1740, Willmar, Minn. 56201.
