AUSTIN -- An improved defense led the Ridgewater women's basketball to a mild upset in their MCAC Southern Division opener against Riverland Wednesday.

The Lady Warriors held Riverland to 18 first-half points en route to a 60-54 win.

Riverland came into the game with an 11-2 record. Ridgewater was 5-7.

"Our defensive intensity was key tonight," said Ridgewater coach Carrie Ogdahl.

Riverland, a terror from three-point range this season, shot as well from distance as did the Lady Warriors -- both at about 33 percent -- but Ridgewater outmuscled the Blue Devils 44-33 on the boards.

"We really did a nice job of boxing out," Ogdahl added. "We had 12 offensive boards, so we were able to attack them, too."

Tara Thielke posted a double-double of 21 points and 10 rebounds for Ridgewater. Kari Caspers added 16 points and Chelsea Voorhees had 12 boards.

Danielle Goeman, who had six points in the first half, sprained her ankle in the second half and did not return. The Lady Warriors will not be in action until next Wednesday at Anoka-Ramsey.
