Delbert J. Altmann Aug. 21, 1930 - Jan. 8, 2009
OLIVIA -- Delbert Joseph Altmann, 78, of Olivia died Thursday at Abbott-Northwestern Hospital in Minneapolis.
The service will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. Aloysius Catholic Church in Olivia. Burial with military rites will be at Olivia Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday with a prayer service at 7 p.m. at Dirks-Blem Funeral Home in Olivia and from 9:45 to 10:45 a.m. Tuesday bofore the service at the funeral home.
He was born Aug. 21, 1930, in New Ulm to Ben and Anna (Reiderer) Altmann. He graduated from New Ulm High School and Ellendale North Dakota Teachers College and received his master's degree from Colorado State. He served in the U.S. Army in the Korean War from 1952 to 1954.
He married Dorothy Eastlund on June 11, 1960, in Appleton. His first teaching position in Odessa included coaching several sports and being principal. He worked in Appleton as principal from 1957 to 1964. The family moved to Olivia where he served as principal from 1964 to 1985. Since 1995, he and his wife spent winters at their home in Tucson, Ariz.
He was a longtime member of St. Aloysius Catholic Church and served on the finance committee for many years. He was a member of the Olivia Lions, the American Legion and the VFW.
He is survived by his wife; two sons: Steve (and Sue) Altmann, and Dave (and Kathy) Altmann, all of Olivia; five granddaughters; siblings: Harold Altmann of Calgary, Alberta, and Mary Ann Bushard of Chicago, Ill.
He was preceded in death by an infant son and one granddaughter.
