He received his education at St. Johns Lutheran School until he was confirmed. He graduated from Buffalo Lake High School, and attended one year of college at Winona State.

Dennis met Dianne Petersen while playing softball in Cosmos, and they were married on May 10, 1969, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Brookfield Township. Dennis and Dianne resided in Litchfield for three years until they made way to farming in 1972 east of Lakeside. They later purchased a Grade A dairy farm in 1976 on Long Lake near Grove City. In November of 1984, they moved to Dennis parents home, and set up for Grade A dairy. Dennis retired from dairy farming in 1997, but continued to farm with beef cattle and chickens. He was a member of Pheasants Forever, and was presently serving on the Boon Lake Evergreen Cemetery Board. He was a Sunday School superintendent and teacher, and served on the Church Council at Arndahl Lutheran Church in Grove City and Grace Lutheran Church in Lake Lillian. Dennis was currently a member of Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church in Buffalo Lake.

Dennis enjoyed duck hunting, and always made time for playing cards. He especially liked playing pinochle, sheepshead, 500, and spoons, just to name a few. He always sought out a challenging puzzle. He enjoyed playing softball, and announcing at 4H horse shows. Some of his fondest memories include playing ball on the Cosmos team league with his son Jonathan, as well as 4-wheeling with Rosie (his dog) along with his Grandson Nicholas.
