Dennis W. Sayre March 2, 1944 - July 3, 2009
CYRUS -- Dennis William Sayre, 65, of Cyrus died Friday at Stevens Community Medical Center in Morris.
The service will be at 10:30 a.m. today at Trinity Lutheran Church in Cyrus. Burial will be in First Lutheran Cemetery in Kensington. Military rites will be provided by the Morris American Legion, VFW and AmVets.
Visitation will be at the church for one hour before the service. Arrangements are with the Pedersen Funeral Home of Morris.
He was born March 2, 1944, in Springfield to Ernest and Ella (Willms) Sayre. He grew up in Kensington and graduated from Kensington Public School. He continued his education for six months at the BCA School for Law Enforcement.
On Aug. 15, 1964, he married Betty Halvorson in Kensington. They lived in Morris until 1969, when they moved to Cyrus. He worked at the University of Minnesota for 35 years, 32 of which were spent as a campus police officer. He retired from the university in 2000 as a police lieutenant. He then drove school bus for the Cyrus School District until the time of his death.
He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Cyrus. He served as president of the 9-F Sportsman's Club and was a member of the Morris Rifle Club and the Morris Eagles, serving as vice president. He also served six years as an infantryman with the Minnesota National Guard.
He is survived by his wife; two children: Brenda (and Rick) Ewy of St. Paul Park and Martin Sayre of St. Cloud; three grandchildren; and two brothers: Larry (and Dorothy) Sayre of Morris and Randy (and Marsha) Sayre of Alexandria.
He was preceded in death by one brother and one sister.
