The victim has been identified as Jason Douglas McPherson, 36, who resided at 718 Lake Forest Circle, Detroit Lakes. McPherson was once part owner of J&K Marine in Detroit Lakes.

A deputy saw a blue 2004 Kia driving at an excessive speed on 130th Street around 4:30 p.m., the release states. The driver failed to yield at a stop sign at a railroad crossing as he passed the deputy.

In the ensuing chase, McPherson turned north onto 270th Avenue and then cut across a stubble field. He struck a drainage ditch, causing the vehicle to flip. McPherson was not wearing a seat belt and was ejected from the vehicle.

McPherson was taken to St. Mary's Innovis Health in Detroit Lakes, where he died shortly before 6 p.m. The Sheriff's Office is awaiting toxicology reports to determine if alcohol was a factor.

McPherson's driving privileges had been revoked.
