WILLMAR - The Minnesota Department of Transportation is reporting difficult driving conditions over most of the state on Christmas Day, with all the roads in west central Minnesota classified as difficult.
Roads in the metro area and northeast part of the state have been upgraded to fair driving condition.
Crews have been plowing roads and, aided by the warm temperatures, the application of chemicals had been effective in keeping roads cleared, said District 8 MNDOT spokeswoman Diane Beck.
But the return of snow early this afternoon has turned the roads white again, she said.
There have been reports of slippery and slushy roads in the area and the state patrol was responding this afternoon to a report of a vehicle in the near ditch off state Highway 23 north of Willmar.
Kandiyohi County Sheriff's Deputy Ron Konieska said, however, his office has not fielded reports of vehicles going off the road. "People have been pretty good," he said.
Beck said at least one MnDOT supervisor said he's thankful the public heeded the weather forecast and stayed off roads. "It made their jobs easier," she said.
