n Jessica Lynn Jones, 22, of Doran, was arraigned Wednesday on a felony charge of fifth-degree controlled substance possession.
Unconditional bail was set at $50,000. Conditional bail was set at $25,000. She also faces charges for driving without a Minnesota driver's license and possession of drug paraphernalia.
According to the complaint, an officer was called to a Willmar hotel around 4 p.m. Monday by a manager. The person reported that Jones was leaving to go to the Kandiyohi County Humane Society to pick up a dog that he had reported to the police earlier to take to the society.
The officer was informed that Jones had a warrant for her arrest in Clay County for not having a Minnesota driver's license and that her North Dakota license was suspended. She was advised that she was going to be arrested.
A passenger in the vehicle, who was wanted on a warrant in North Dakota for distribution of imitation controlled substance, ran away, but was caught by a Kandiyohi County Sheriff's deputy. The woman, Julie Ann Bertrand, 35, of Ada, also appeared on a felony charge for being a fugitive from justice. She was ordered held until an extradition hearing on Monday.
Both women were taken to jail. A search of the vehicle revealed a lockbox containing a scale, a bag containing .3 grams of a white flaky substance and spoons with a sticky substance that tested positive as methamphetamine.
Jones' next appearance is Sept. 29.
- Nicholas Austin Sorenson, 19, of Willmar, pleaded guilty to a felony fifth-degree controlled substance charge for having marijuana in his vehicle.
As part of a plea agreement, a gross misdemeanor charge for failing to transfer the registration on a motor vehicle will be dismissed.
The charges were filed after a Willmar police officer on patrol on June 18 observed a vehicle turning left onto Becker Avenue from Third Street. The car had no front license plate, a very loud muffler, illegal dark windows and was traveling at a high rate of speed. The officer recognized the driver as Sorenson, from previous contacts, and stopped the vehicle. The officer observed the strong order of marijuana when Sorenson, who had bloodshot and watery eyes, rolled down the window.
During a search of the vehicle, the officer found two bags of a leafy green substance, which tested positive as marijuana and weighed 86 grams.
The same officer had stopped Sorenson on June 11, at which time he advised him to get the vehicle title transferred to his name, as he claimed to own the vehicle. The second license plate for the car was found in the trunk.
He will be sentenced Oct. 30.
- Cody Wayne Garvick, 17, of Clara City, pleaded guilty to a felony charge of second-degree burglary.
As part of a plea agreement, misdemeanor charges for property damage, aiding and abetting property damage, theft and underage consumption will be dismissed.
The case was transferred to Chippewa County for disposition. Judge Donald M. Spilseth approved a referral to circle sentencing, but left sentencing to the discretion of Chippewa County court.
The charges were filed after Kandiyohi County sheriff 's deputies were called at around 11 p.m. on June 26 to a Raymond home on a burglary report. The residents said they had been out for the evening and came home to find the house burglarized and 29 cans of beer, bottles of hard liquor and knives missing.
The couple reported that a family member, and some friends, had been to the home recently and that one of them had brought out a knife to show. Later that same night, two deputies were called to another Raymond home on a report that a juvenile had been injured with a knife. The deputies observed the knife, later identified as that which was stolen, laying in the yard with blood on it.
A 15-year-old and Garvick were questioned and Garvick allegedly admitted that he injured another juvenile with the knife while playing with it. He smelled of alcohol and was given a breath test. A deputy entered the home and observed, in plain view, a bag containing beer cans consistent with the missing beer.
When questioned, Garvick admitted to drinking 18 to 20 cans of beer and some type of mixed drink and admitted to committing the burglary with two others.
Officers returned to the home and recovered 26 beer cans from a closet and a garbage can. One of the others later admitted to the burglary and said they drank the alcohol and that's when the knife incident happened.
Neighbors later reported that they had observed the burglary and that the boys ran across their lawn, were chased by their dog and dropped a can of beer.
