Don Davern Aug. 23, 1954 - Feb. 8, 2009
OLIVIA -- Donald William Davern, 54, of Olivia died Sunday at Hennepin County Medical Center in Minneapolis.
The service will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday at Cross Of Calvary Lutheran Church in Olivia.
Visitation will begin at noon Friday at the church. Arrangements are by Dirks-Blem Funeral Service of Olivia. Memorials are preferred to the Olivia Public Library or donor's choice.
He was born Aug. 23, 1954, in Duluth to Richard and Virginia (Winzinburg) Davern. He grew up in Duluth and graduated from Duluth East High School. He attended Alexandria Technical College for two years for the law enforcement program and then moved to Olivia in 1975 to join the Olivia Police Department.
In 1977, he became the assistant chief of police. He served as Renville County Sheriff from 1987 to 1991 then returned to the Olivia Police Department as assistant chief of police. He had been chief of the police since 1992.
He married Cheryl Knight on Sept. 20, 1980.
He is survived by his children: Caitlin Davern and Jordan Davern, both of Olivia; one granddaughter; his fiancée: Nyla Negen of Olivia; his father; siblings: Denny Davern (and fiancée Kathy Thorsvik), Tim (and Char) Davern, Linda (and Mark) Johnson, all of Duluth, and Kathy Davern of Cloquet.
He was preceded in death by his mother.
