OLIVIA - Don Kohout, age 74, of Olivia, died peacefully on Thursday, December 13, 2012, at Golden Living Center in Olivia. Mass of Christian Burial is Saturday 10:30 a.m. at St. Aloysius Catholic Church in Olivia with Rev. Paul van de Crommert as celebrant. Burial is in the Church Cemetery. Visitation is Friday from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Dirks-Blem Funeral Home in Olivia and continues Saturday from 9:15 a.m. to 10:15 a.m. at the funeral home.

Donald James Kohout was born on the family farm in Henryville Township, rural Danube, on September 5, 1938, the son of Joseph and Anna (Houdek) Kohout. Don attended country school and graduated from Danube High School. Don married the love of his life, Marlene Reese, on July 31, 1958, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Bechyn. They started married life on the family farm and later moved into Olivia. The marriage was blessed with five children. Don worked many years for Red Owl and later for Danube Ready Mix until retirement. Don enjoyed fishing, hunting, camping, playing cards, dancing, listening to old-time music, gardening, and spending time with his family. Don thoroughly enjoyed his grandchildren and great-grandchildren who affectionately called him “Grandpa Hoot”. Don was a faithful member of the St. Aloysius Catholic Church of Olivia where he served as an usher.

Don is survived by his wife, Marlene Kohout of Olivia; his five children: Jim (and Julie) Kohout of Olivia, Dave (and Deb) Kohout of Glencoe, Terri (and Dan) Hagen of Olivia, Brenda (and Bill) Johnson of Renville, and Barb (and Dave) Novotny of Renville; his thirteen grandchildren: Craig (and Bri) Kohout of Andover, Jason Kohout of Olivia, Jeremy (and Kristin) Kohout of Glencoe, Dan Kohout (and Vanessa George) of Glencoe, Jayme Kohout of Glencoe, Nathan (and Sarah) Hagen of Brooten, Tara Hagen (and Joe Poluka) of Spicer, Brian Hagen of Olivia, Nick (and Lisa) Daak of Pine Island, Dustin (and Lisa) Daak of Renville, Chad (and Cassie) Novotny of Renville, Kendra (and Graham) Rigge of Renville, and Trent Novotny of Renville; his eleven great-grandchildren; his three brothers: Bernard (and Lorraine) Kohout of Pennock, Joe (and Jean) Kohout of Chokio, Denny Kohout of Atwater, and his two sisters: Donna (and Clayton) Breezee of Atwater, and Diane (and Mark) Hempel of Hudson, CO. Don was preceded in death by his parents and his brother Gordy Kohout.
