Donald Tersteeg Sept. 6, 1928 - Oct. 3, 2013
BIRD ISLAND - Donald Tersteeg, age 85, of Bird Island died Thursday, October 3, 2013 at the Renville County Hospital in Olivia. Mass of Christian Burial is Sunday 1:30 p.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church with Rev. George Schmit as celebrant. Visitation is Saturday at the Island Ballroom in Bird Island from 4:30-8p.m. with a prayer service at 6:30 p.m. Visitation continues Sunday at St. Marys Catholic Church for one hour prior to the service. Arrangements are by Dirks-Blem Funeral Service of Bird Island. Memorials are preferred to St. Mary's Catholic Church.
Donald J. Tersteeg was born September 6, 1928 on the family farm in Olivia, MN, to Bernard and Myrtle (Monson) Tersteeg. He attended school in Olivia and at St. Marys in Bird Island graduating from Olivia High School in 1946. After graduation Don started farming, which remained his life-long passion. He spent four years in the National Guard serving at Camp Rucker, Alabama and Fort Sill, Oklahoma as a Sgt. 1st Class. On July 7, 1951 he married Loretta Plass and they lived in Dothan, Alabama while completing his service. They lived and farmed at Bird Island for many years moving into town in 1995. He enjoyed traveling abroad and within the U.S. including spending the last 17 winters in Mission, TX. He also enjoyed dancing, playing Bridge, growing roses, reading Louis LAmour and Zane Grey books, and "shooting the breeze" with family and friends. Don especially loved his family and keeping track of his children and grandchildrens accomplishments. He took pride in assisting his children show their 4-H Fair cattle, which included several "Grand Champions" to the State Fair, and he didnt miss many of the grandchildrens sports activities. Don was a Lector at St. Marys Catholic Church for 40 years, past President of St. Marys School Board, member of The Knights of Columbus, and served on the Farmers Coop Country Elevator Board.
The vast number of close friends he had is a testament to his warm and inviting personality. He leaves to cherish his memories, a wife of 62 years, Loretta; his eight children and their spouses: Theresa (and Richard) Quandt, Don (and Veronica) Tersteeg, Mary (and Andy) Trick, Amy (and Steve) Miller, Alan (and Peggy) Tersteeg, Lisa (and Scott) McNamara, Scott (and Peggy) Tersteeg, and Randy (and Theresa) Tersteeg; his 21 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren; his sisters: Joan (and Dick) Honzay and Annette Baker; his brothers Dan Tersteeg, Jim (and Marlys) Tersteeg, and Andrew Tersteeg; and many nieces and nephews. Don was preceded in death by his parents.
