Don't forget to keep pets safe from heat
WILLMAR -- The local animal shelter reminds pet owners to keep their animals safe from the extreme heat this week.
Bobbie Bauman, operations director at the Hawk Creek Animal Shelter in Willmar, recommends plenty of shade, fresh water and less activity for outdoor pets. In an emailed message, she also suggested giving dogs a kiddie pool for a dip.
Pets should not be left in a car or other vehicle. Bauman says anyone who sees a pet in a car should call the authorities.
For indoor pets, use a fan to keep air moving if there is not air conditioning. Pull the curtains to keep the sun out and keep the house cooler. Those pets also need fresh water, Bauman says.
Seek veterinary assistance if your pet is in distress, and Bauman says many vets have after-hours emergency service available too.
